Patient satisfaction and objective outcomes after Burch colposuspension for female stress urinary incontinence: no mesh
Aims: To evaluate clinical characteristics, objective and subjective outcomes, patient satisfaction, and postoperative complications in women undergoing Burch colposuspension for stress urinary incontinence.
Methods: This retrospective observational study included 137 women who underwent Burch colposuspension between 2018 and 2022. Objective outcomes were assessed using cough stress and pad tests preoperatively and at 6 months postoperatively. Subjective outcomes included a stress urinary incontinence severity score (0-5) and patient satisfaction measured using a 5-point Likert scale. Postoperative complications were recorded. Descriptive statistical analyses were performed.
Results: The mean age was 58.13±7.08 years and the mean body-mass index was 32.20±3.71 kg/m². At 6 months, 88.3% of patients demonstrated negative cough stress and pad test results. Symptom severity improved substantially, with 89.1% reporting a postoperative score of 0 compared to 43.8% reporting scores of 4-5 preoperatively. High patient satisfaction was observed, with 94.9% reporting scores of 4-5. Postoperative complications occurred in 9.5% of patients.
Conclusion: Burch colposuspension provides high short-term success rates, significant symptom improvement, and excellent patient satisfaction with an acceptable complication profile. However, longer-term follow-up studies are required to confirm the durability of these outcomes.
